Open Cypher
The olde earthbound genesis for this poem is the legacy of Craig Grant aka muMs the
Schemer. The gifted poet, emcee, actor, and playwright who died suddenly and unexpectedly
in 2021. muMs was a giant in our community and a blessing to the world through his own critically acclaimed work in television and film and his mentorship of other creatives around the world. Open Cypher makes reference to Oz the HBO TV drama on which muMs made his acting debut in a role aptly named poet. Here in this work Oz maps onto the allegory of the phantasmagoria of our post-COVD-19 universe. Open Cypher is a call out, a call to the powers of underground social, cultural and creative movements to enunciate and animate anew the organic mechanisms by which the left over and the invisibilized touch,discover, and broadcast the wealth of their own humanity into the toxic, repressive, suffocated atmospheres of mainstream systems otherwise determined to deny them their dignity at every turn. Still culture is a viral uncontainable force. Hip hop, for all its complicated, dangerous, and traumatic chapters, still renders a verse that inspires the earth to tell its own story in its own words, the best ways it knows how. Here in Alien Day the aliens now invoke the evidence of the majesty of Hip-Hop's viral bazaar as a worthy virtual foundation for the design and production of new projects built for the nanofutures of the global and the subversive.
